Homework #3

Due Date: 3/9/05, in class 70 Points

Each problem is worth 10 points

1. Draw all possible leading order Feynman diagrams for Compton scattering: e- g ® e- g.

2. The coefficient k in the linear part of the strong force potential, U = kr, is equal to
1 GeV/fm. Find the force that holds the two quarks together in the SI units.

3. Derive the luminosity formula (11.6) from Perkins.

4. Find the luminosity of the Tevatron, which has a ring with the radius of 1 km, 3 x 1010 antiprotons and 2 x 1011 protons per bunch, 36 proton and 36 antiproton bunches, and the radius of the beams of 30 mm each.

5. Perkins, 2.5.

6. Perkins, 2.6

7. Derive the relativistic Breit-Wigner formula (2.32) from the formula (2.28) by multiplying both the denominator and numerator by (E+M)2 and using approximation E » M.
